This is straight from classical armor. This is a small section 5 rows wide. 

It can be made in either of the two methods, "vertical" as shown on the green vase, or "horizontal" as shown on the piece of pottery.

The standard size is 1 inch wide while the "tiny" version is 0.75 inches wide and made from much more delicate rings.
